One of the landmarks that San Juan del Sur is known for is the giant statue of Jesus de la Misericordia. There are two ways to get there: the road or, if you're more spiritual, climbing up the rocky cliffs above the ocean. Once you arrive at the top, you'll be rewarded with a spectacular view not only of San Juan but also of the entire rocky coastline stretching both to the Costa Rican border and in the other direction. If you wish, you can visit the chapel below the statue.

In my opinion, being up there and enjoying the view is better than lying on the beach below...
