Delve into the continuation of the powerful discourse, "Eenati Jeevitham Eeshwaranugraham Part-2" (Today's Life is God's Grace), delivered by Padma Shri Sri Garikipati Narasimha Rao at the Kamakshi Sameta Ekamaranatha Swamy Temple in Hyderabad. This session focuses heavily on the true meaning of Dharma, the ethics of temple management, and the seven-fold path to devotion as articulated in Adi Shankaracharya’s Shivananda Lahari.
Temple Renovation and Ethical Conduct
Sri Garikipati makes a strong plea, conveyed globally via media, to stop constructing new temples and instead maintain existing ones well ("kotta gullu kaṭṭakaṇḍi unna gullu bāga jarigēla cūḍaṇḍi"). He critically addresses the modern trend where individuals initiate new temple construction solely to become a chairman or committee member, leading to petty squabbles and assertions of "my temple" ("nā guḍi," "mā guḍi"). He firmly reminds the audience that the temple belongs only to Lord Shiva (Ekāmaranāthudu), and the committee members, priests, and devotees are transient. True temple development means the surrounding area, up to a radius of ten miles, should be free from crimes like rapes, murders, and conflicts. If the Shiva residing in our hearts is suffering, building bigger temples and towers will not please the Shiva residing in the temple.
The Three Deeds of Merit (Aśvamēdha Samam)
Drawing from ancient wisdom, Sri Garikipati highlights three acts of great merit (Punya), equivalent to performing an Ashwamedha Yaga:
1. Dānam to the Destitute (Daridrāya Kṛtaṁ Dānaṁ): Charity must be given exclusively to the poor, not to wealthy relatives or friends.
2. Restoration of a Dilapidated Temple (Śūnya Liṅgasya Pūjanaṁ): Renovating or reconstructing a forgotten or dilapidated temple (Shiva, Rama, or Krishna) is equivalent to performing the Ashwamedha sacrifice.
3. Cremation of an Orphan Corpse (Anātha Prēta Saṁskāraṁ): Taking the responsibility of cremating an unknown, abandoned corpse, regardless of caste or religion, is essential as it prevents the spread of bacteria and disease. Comforting the bereaved during times of sorrow (Aśubha kāryaṁ) is also a sacred duty, with the speaker noting that offering support, even if it requires a "lie," is acceptable to prevent the despairing parent from collapsing.
The Seven-Fold Path of Devotion (Shivananda Lahari)
Sri Garikipati explains the seven practices articulated by Adi Shankaracharya in Shivananda Lahari for attaining God's grace (Īśvarānugrahaṁ):
1. Praising God (Stōtraṁ): Requires the Tongue (Jihvā).
2. Meditation (Dhyānaṁ): Requires the Mind (Chittam).
3. Prostration (Nati): Requires the Head (Śirō) and Hands (Hasta).
4. Circumambulation (Pradakṣiṇam): Requires the Feet (Anghri). Performing three rounds is necessary to shed Tamas, Rajas, and even Satva Guna, thus avoiding ego and blind faith.
5. Service (Saparya): Requires the Hands (Hasta). Service is not just temple cleaning, but also maintaining a clean home and neighborhood, and serving parents.
6. Seeing the Deity (Ālōkanaṁ): Requires the Eyes (Nayana). This means gazing deeply at the deity’s form (from head to toe and back) to fix the mind.
7. Listening (Ākarṇanaṁ): Requires the Ears (Śrōtra). This involves listening to spiritual discourses and wise words.
Shankaracharya prays that his limbs, such as his tongue and eyes, should spontaneously compel him toward devotion, demanding that the Lord ensure he never utters useless words (Avachaḥ).
