SSX (PS2) | First Playthrough

Welcome to my first playthrough of SSX (2001) for the PlayStation 2! This playthrough was 5.5 hours long.

I never owned any of the SSX games when I was a kid, but I remember seeing their gameplay featured on G4TV. I would say I enjoyed this experience and I'm looking forward to playing the sequels, but it definitely got a bit frustrating.

In this playthrough, I played as Mac and placed on every race then went to do every showoff. It wasn't until the 2nd-to-last showoff that I would say I finally understood the gameplay. I knew tricks tied into the race gameplay, but I was able to pound my head against the game without performing any and at least placing. On the first showoff map, I noticed the boost mechanic. On Tokyo Megaplex, I figured out how to build it up and incorporate it into the races.

On one hand, I wish I was able to figure these mechanics out earlier. However, I also realize that a lot of the replay value from this game comes from leveling up each character, so I'd say the entire first playthrough of every map on your chosen character is pretty much a tutorial. What I've discovered in playing franchises from their starting point is that it definitely feels clunkier and more frustrating, but once I understand the first title in a series it makes starting the sequels far more enjoyable. Funny how that works!

Again, I will eventually play SSX Tricky and SSX3. I did enjoy my time with SSX, but I didn't realize that until the last two maps I played.
