WWE Survivor Series 1999, taking place in Detroit, was originally set to feature a triple threat championship match featuring Triple H, Steve Austin and The Rock. During the show Steve Austin was run down by someone driving a car, thus beginning a long storyline as Vince McMahon and others tried to work out who was behind the wheel. A triple threat WWF championship match still takes place, but Steve Austin gets replaced.

Elsewhere on the card Chris Jericho gets a shot at Chyna's Intercontinental Championship, the tag titles are up for grabs when The New Age Outlaws defend against Al Snow and Mankind, and Kurt Angle makes his official WWF debut when he faces Shawn Stasiak.
