The Graduate Working Groups on Global Issues is a program that for over two decades has supported graduate working groups across Duke campus, each comprised of graduate students from an array of departments, programs and professional schools who gather to discuss topics with a global focus. The program started in 1997 through a grant awarded to Duke University Center for International & Global Studies (DUCIGS) by the Ford Foundation.

Currently, DUCIGS is hosting 14 such groups. On April 15, 2020, 5 working groups from the 2019-2020 cohort presented their research. Each group was represented by one or two members.

DUCIGS Director, Giovanni Zanalda moderated the panel, which included:

Corruption in Developing Countries – Felipe Montano Campos

Decolonizing Global Health in LMICs – Laura Mkumba and Andrea Koris

Graduates Engineering & Researching Microbiomes (aka, GERM) – Alex McCumber

Informed Choices for Equitable Development – Claire LeBarbenchon

Ocean Policy Working Group – Jack Eynon

The presentation was part of Wednesdays at the Center, a weekly series in which scholars, artists, journalists, and others speak informally about their work to an audience of students, faculty, staff, and community members.
