The Wilson Family – Wilson Cattle Company & Beef Northwest, Oregon – Beyond a buzzword

Little goes on without specific purpose at Wilson Cattle Company. Its six generations of meticulous puzzle masters have focused on making better each piece of the bigger picture. Cattle are critical to the vision.

Rich ranching heritage meets modern technology for the cattle feeding partners in Northeast Oregon. The ranch runs 2,000 Angus-based cows and serves as the stocker operation for Beef Northwest. Four feedyard locations in Oregon and Washington finish 100,000 head every year.

Here, sustainability is more than a buzzword; it’s a living legacy at Wilson Cattle Company and Beef Northwest feeders.

“If it’s good for the little bugs in the soil, or the migratory birds or larger mammals like elk or deer, even rodents, it’s going to be good for the cattle,” Zach Wilson says. “If you treat it more as a holistic system, rather than simply inputs for the cattle, then you’re going to get better performance out of your cattle.”
Balancing the cowboy way of life and innovative technology is just one way the Wilsons are working to create a more sustainable beef supply chain for the future.
For them, sustainability means taking care of the people, cattle, land and the business.

This is their story, part five of the mini-documentary series, “A Rare Breed: Legacies of Excellence.”
