My name is Dan, and I am a railfan based mainly on Pan Am Railways’ Districts 2 and 3. Short and simple: With the last remaining C40-9 “Top Hat” having officially been released as an AC44C6M, I figured we’d throw back to one of the veteran locomotives while it was still in service. Here we see NS 8826 (C40-9) in the classic NS “Thoroughbred” paint scheme hauling a classic AYMO though Shirley, MA on the first day of September 2012. Accompanying the unit are NS 9171 (C40-9W) and NS 9650 (C40-9W) as they accelerate their 112-car combination of COFC and Autoracks west. In the near future not only would the symbols AYMO and MOAY be replaced by 22k and 23k all the way to Ayer, but the autoracks would be given their own designated train and symbols as the service continued to grow. NS 8826 was rebuilt into NS 4114 (AC44C6M) by the NS Roanoke Locomotive Shops in August 2018, gone but never to be forgotten just like the rest of the C40-9 fleet.
