Kubota BX25 front driveshaft fail.

I was turning the compost pile with the front end loader, when I heard a click-click-click sound coming from the front axle? The drive shaft fell out, and the universal joint hub was banging on the frame.
It makes me wonder if there ever was a lock-pin since new, as there is no torque on the pin, so it can't break, and no reason the cotter pin should fall out... ??? A standard English size pin passed through the hub, but was too large to pass through the splined shaft, I guess it was Metric? So I ground down the English pin to fit, because I was not going to waste two hours to travel to the Kubota dealer for a 50 cent pin.
