Rachmaninoff revealed to his friend that the inspiration behind this piece was "the sea and the seagulls", represented by the triplets in the left hand and the duplets in the right hand, respectively. Also prominent in the left hand is the Dies Irae chant that Rachmaninoff was obsessed with throughout his life.
