Promoter is none but the one who starts its business in the first place.If he think that he now need more money to grow its business then he lists his company in the Share Market where he offers some shares of his company in exchange of money.The people who invest in his company become stockholders of that company and the company gets money to grow its business.If the business grow,the company shares its profits with all the shareholders.

But this scenario does not happen all the time.Many a time,promoters do naughty things either doing some scam or selling its shares early due to no business growth.As a result,the shareholders in that company get stuck.Since the promoter sold almost all their shares and most of the shares are held by public,so there are lot of supply but no demand for that stock,consequently,the stock price fell and investore suffer huge losses.

That is why,we need to keep on eye what the promoters are doing because they are the ones who know the company best.If they are selling shares continuously,it means they lost faith in their business and the business won't grow.On the other hand,if they are buying shares of their own company from the open market then it's a positive sign that they are optimistic about their business.Therefore,when a company buys its shares from open market,its share price shoots up.

I generally prefer companies with at least 30% Promoter Holding especially when it comes to Mid Cap and Small Cap stocks.You may be thinking there are companies with less than 30% Promoter Holding.Yes you are right.These companies are mainly well established Large Cap company.Almost everyone knows them.They are run by professionals.So many people are involded in the company,therefore,committing a fraud in these company is not that easy.But when it comes to Mid Caps and Small Caps, Promoter Holding should be more than 30% as per my opinion and you should check the shareholding patter to check what promoters are doing or whether they are selling their shares or buying.
