Upma | South Indian Style Upma
Ingredients
Rava/Sooji/Upma Rawa/Bansi Sooji - 1 Cup
Water - 3 Cup
Peanuts/Mungfali - 2 to 3 Tablespoon
Mustard seeds - 1 Teaspoon
Urad dal/Black gram without skin - 1/2 Teaspoon
Asafoetida/Hing - a pinch
Green chilli - 2 cut into long pieces
Dry Red Chilli - 2
Curry Leaves - few
Turmeric powder - 1/2 Teaspoon
Onion - 1 chopped
Carrot - 1 small chopped
Capsicum - 1/2 chopped
Tomato - 1 chopped
Salt - as per taste
Sugar - 1 Teaspoon
Coriander Leaves - a handful chopped
Ghee/Clarified butter - 1 Teaspoon
Oil - 1 Teaspoon + 2 Tablespoon
Instructions
1. Heat a pan and add 1 teaspoon oil. Roast the semolina for 4 to 5 minutes on a low flame. Keep aside.
2. Boil 3 cups of water in a vessel.
3. Then Heat 2 tablespoon oil in a kadai.
4. Add peanuts and saute. Add urad dal/black gram without skin, mustard seeds, asafoetida, green chilli, dry red chilli, curry leaves. Saute for few seconds then add turmeric powder. Mix well.
5. Add chopped onion and saute for a minute.
6. Then add carrot, capsicum. Saute for a minute.
7. Add tomato and cook it for a minute. Add salt to it. Mix well.
8. Add sugar and mix well. Then add coriander leaves. Mix well.
9. Add boiling water and bring it to boil. Once boiled, add roasted semolina in batches, mix well. Cover and let it boil for couple of minutes. Then switch off the flame.
10. Add ghee/clarified butter and mix well. Cover and keep it for a minute.
11. Delicious 'Upma | South Indian Style Upma' is ready to be served.

Upma | South Indian Style Upma or Khara Bhat is a famous and lovable breakfast from South Indian cuisine. This has the goodness of lots of veggies along with semolina. Moreover, this is quick and easy to prepare. It is a flavourful breakfast and has a crunch of peanuts. You can serve this as a breakfast or a tiffin snack or even an evening snack to the kids. Tips and Suggestions by Mom Chef:-
The ratio of semolina/rawa/sooji and water should be 1: 3.
You can add veggies of your choice to make the upma.
If you want you can avoid onion.
Do not overcook the veggies, keep them little crunchy.
