In this installment of Jazz, Period., we revisit Kevin Dean and Al McLean in one of the finest acoustical spaces in Montreal, the Mount Royal United Church. They are joined by they young pianist Marie-Fatima Rudolf, who meets the two eye to eye on this blues based original by trumpeter Kevin Dean.

Al McLean opens up with a blistering, gospel tinged solo, throwing the spiritual gauntlet down for Dean and Rudolf. The other two player respond to McLeans call with a soulful answer, and the tune takes on a life of its own.

In this recording, Dean and McLean both play unusual period instruments, in the case of Kevin Dean, a rare 1947 Olds Super Recording trumpet that is not his own. Al McLean is heard with his ubiquitous 2-tone 1917 Conn Wonder tenor.

The musicians are captured by period microphones, which give an overall darkness to the sound palette. For horns, a pair of classic RCA 77D ribbon mics were used, and for piano, a Bang & Olufsen BM-5 stereo coincidence ribbon microphone.

Kevin Dean is professor, and a founding faculty member of the Jazz program at McGill University's Schulich School of Music (http://www.mcgill.ca/music/).
