Modern Intimacy with Dr. Kate Balestrieri

Описание к видео Modern Intimacy with Dr. Kate Balestrieri

When it comes to relationships and sexuality, says, Dr. Kate Balestrieri, licensed psychologist and certified sex therapist, there’s a lot we can’t control. We have the model our parents set for us and an automated drive to repeat those patterns. We are limited to a certain extent by our genetics and driven by a deep psychological desire to belong. However, we do have control over whether we reject the old narratives and examples we have been taught and can welcome a lot of change into our lives.

Deevo and Lisa talk about their own upbringings, and give insight into how those upbringings led them into and out of their first marriages, and how they plan to approach sex and relationships going forward.

On this episode of A Little Impolite, they ask Dr. Kate Balestrieri how she encourages the couples in her practice to talk to each other, her opinions on pornography, and her recommendations for talking to your teenagers about sex.

Quotes
“Is there such a thing as monogamy?” (6:24-6:26 | Lisa)

“There’s a big world out there of things you’ve never experienced and you think, ‘Why didn’t I partake of this?’ because it’s life changing, it’s good, it’s joy, and I’m not going to be burning in hell.” (12:00-12:14 | Lisa)

“I just went through the motions. I didn’t have any aptitude or forethought or self awareness around where I went to college, for example. I just thought, ‘That’s what I’m supposed to do. I’m going to go to college, get my degree, take a job, work for fifty years and live in my house with my white picket fence, two kids and one dog. And I think most people get stuck in that space.” (18:44-19:05 | Deevo)

“We’re not taught these skills in school. We’re not taught to be strong communicators. We’re taught to win an argument. We’re taught to defend ourselves.” (29:07-29:15 | Dr. Kate Balestrieri)

“What’s more important than having exactly the same erotic template is how you’re going to negotiate together, honor each other’s limits, and be curious with each other.”(30:38-31:48 | Dr. Kate Balestrieri)
