ALL CONDITIONALS | 0,1,2,3 and MIXED CONDITIONALS - English Grammar | if.... | Part 1
Today you will learn about the four conditionals and mixed conditionals. Let's begin with a general overview of the conditionals; as the lesson continues, we will dive into the details.
In English, we have four conditionals: zero, one, two, and three, plus mixed conditionals. Each conditional has an if clause, a comma, and a main clause.
The if clause gives us a condition. By condition, we mean situation. One of the main clauses provides us with the result. The zero and the first conditional express real, possible conditions and results. The second and third conditional express impossible, hypothetical, unreal conditions and results. Mixed conditionals are a combination of the second and third conditional.

Let's begin with Zero conditional. If plus present simple. We use the zero conditional to express real conditions and results that are always the same. Same in the past, same in the present, same in the future.
For example, If it rains, the grass gets wet. . If plus present simple, present simple. This is real because in rain the grass will always get wet, right? This will never change. So you can move the clauses around there's a little difference, a mini difference. In writing, if your if clause comes first, add that comma. If your main clause comes first, you don't need a comma. So you can say The grass gets wet if it rains.
Here are some examples of zero conditionals.
1. Water boils if it reaches 100 degrees Celsius.
• This statement expresses a scientific fact.
2. If you mix blue and yellow, you get green.
• This is a general truth about color mixing.
3. If it rains, the grass gets wet.
• This is a simple cause-and-effect statement.
4. If the sun sets, it gets dark.
• Another general truth.
5. If you heat ice, it melts.
• This describes a physical process.
6. If you don't water plants, they die.
• A statement about a general consequence.
7. If you touch a flame, it burns.
• Describing a cause-and-effect relationship.
8. If it's a weekday, the school is open.
• Stating a regular occurrence.
9. If you drop a ball, it falls to the ground.
• Describing the law of gravity.
10. If the train is late, people miss their connections.
• A statement about a common consequence.
These sentences illustrate the use of zero conditionals to express facts, truths, and general realities.

While zero conditionals typically use "if," you can also use "when" interchangeably to express the same meaning in some cases. The distinction between "if" and "when" can sometimes be subtle, and in many contexts, they are interchangeable. Here are examples of zero conditionals using "when":
1. When water reaches 100 degrees Celsius, it boils.
• This is equivalent to using "if" and expresses a general truth.
2. When you mix blue and yellow, you get green.
• Interchangeable with "if" to state a general truth about color mixing.
3. When it rains, the grass gets wet.
• Expressing a cause-and-effect relationship with "when."
4. When the sun sets, it gets dark.
• Describing a regular occurrence with "when."
5. When you heat ice, it melts.
• Using "when" to express a physical process.
6. When you don't water plants, they die.
• Describing a general consequence with "when."
7. When you touch a flame, it burns.
• Expressing a cause-and-effect relationship using "when."
8. When it's a weekday, the school is open.
• Stating a regular occurrence with "when."
9. When you drop a ball, it falls to the ground.
• Describing the law of gravity using "when."
10. When the train is late, people miss their connections.
• Using "when" to express a common consequence.
In these examples, "when" can be used instead of "if" without significantly changing the meaning of the sentences. Both "if" and "when" work in zero conditionals when expressing general truths or facts.

So what's the difference between if and when? If you put a stone in water, it sinks. When you place a stone in water, it sinks. There is no difference in meaning because this is always true. But sometimes there is a difference. "When" is used when You are certain, this will happen. You are expecting this. "If" is used when This may happen. When you get home, call me. In this situation, I'm expecting my friend to get home. Of course she's going home. I know it. I will use "If" when I am not sure.
