"On the last day of my visit to Venezia I gave myself a fun challenge to fill the entire Laloran accordion-style sketchbook with the sequence of facades of the beautiful palazzos lining the Grand Canal between Ponte di Rialto and Ca’Rezzonico. Since the canal is not walkable part of the challenge was to find the place where I could get a glimpse of the other side of the canal in order to continue drawing where I left off at the previous spot. I only gave myself about 15 minutes per panel and the entire project took 12 hours of pretty much non-stop sketching. It was very special to experience an entire day in the life of this beautiful city paying attention with all of my senses as it breathed, as the color of the water in the canals was changing throughout the day based on the position of the sun in the sky, as tidal waves of tourists would come and go with every vaparetto (bus boat)…”
