Woodplumpton church is thought to have been on this ground since at least 1086 when it was mentioned in the Doomsday Book. it was rebuilt around 1639 and again in 1900.

One of the older graves we spotted was written in a roman style writing and dated 1689. This grave commemorates the death of James Carter in March 1687 and his daughter Alice in July 1689.

One of the most notable graves in this churchyard is that of Meg Shelton, alleged witch who died in 1705. She was supposedly buried under the boulder that is in place to prevent her from digging her way back out, and was also buried in a shaft head down to further prevent this. She was known at the time for cause cattle to become ill, turning their milk sour, causing crops to fail and even turning herself into animals to evade capture. Ultimately she died by being crushed by a barrel against the wall of her cottage.
