Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a retrovirus that destroys or impairs the cells of the immune system. As HIV infection progresses, the person becomes more susceptible to infections. The advanced stage of HIV infection is known as acquired immunodeficiency syndrome or AIDS. It can take 10-15 years for an HIV-infected person to develop AIDS without treatment. With the rise of more treatment and drug therapies, people living with HIV may not necessarily progress to AIDS.

Dr Loh Jiashen, Infectious Disease Specialist from the Infectious Disease Specialist Group in Singapore, goes in-depth into explaining HIV and AIDS.
