Warwick Castle gets a cleaning

Warwick Castle, one of England’s most well-known medieval fortifications, recently got a cleaning. A team of cleaners scaled the iconic landmark for its annual two-week abseil clean. This year's adventure saw the two-person team descending the castle’s 100-foot-tall South Front to inspect and maintain the historical 800-year-old stonework.

While dangling from the castle walls, the team removed vegetation and checked on the walls of an area spanning 3,000 square metres. They also cleaned roofs on top of the small towers and chimneys and conduct detailed inspections on Guy’s and Caesar’s Towers.

This essential work helps to preserve its structural integrity.

Matt Halford, Head of Estates and Facilities at Warwick Castle, commented: “Watching our team abseil down Warwick Castle is always a sight to behold. The annual abseil clean is vital for maintaining the castle's majestic appearance and preserving its rich history. By removing vegetation and inspecting the stonework, we ensure that this medieval marvel remains intact for future generations to admire and enjoy."

Warwick Castle traces its origins back to 1068 when it was built by William the Conqueror as part of his campaign to consolidate power across England. Strategically located on a bend in the River Avon, the original wooden motte-and-bailey structure served as a stronghold to secure Norman rule in the Midlands. Over the centuries, the castle evolved significantly, with stone walls replacing wood and towers being added to enhance its defensive capabilities. By the 14th century, Warwick Castle had become a formidable symbol of power, particularly under the influential Earls of Warwick, who played key roles in English politics and warfare, including the Wars of the Roses.

In the centuries that followed, Warwick Castle underwent numerous transformations, from a military fortress to a stately residence and ultimately a tourist attraction.
