There was an ode to the femme fatale, with echoes of barely there lingerie, on the Fall 2016 Reem Acra runway. “It’s the woman we all want to be,” said Acra. “It’s a very seductive collection.” It was indeed: Some dresses were so slinky they resembled burlesque slips with glimpses of garter belts peeking through their lacy, body-skimming silhouettes. There was also an air of covered-up mysteriousness, which is where Acra shined. The opening look, a black, cap-sleeve dress of intricate, embroidered lace, was both precious and sexy, with navel-grazing bare décolletage and a high Victoriana-esque collar that gave it a whiff of innocence. A black, embroidered-silk charmeuse off-the-shoulder gown coolly received a dose of vamp when its skirt was cut with slices of deep red—while for the same temptress effect, a rectangular piece of red lace traveled up the middle of the body and scooped up to the neck into a choker.

Acra also used embellishments in an artful way, especially fringe. On a black silk charmeuse dress, long fringe hung at the elbows, showing a sliver of wrist, or swayed down from the waist for a coy glance of thigh. The adornment was particularly beautiful on a teal gown: When in motion, the fringe at the legs and shoulders created a stunning, sweeping movement. Shiny accents were also a nice touch. A powder-blue chiffon dress may have been innocent on its own, but a strappy, silver embroidered bodice gave a waist-outlining, corseted effect and cut the fragility of the piece. A lilac dress with a silk charmeuse skirt that bunched at the waist was connected to a rhinestone-encrusted bustier that covered the torso in Deco-style strips and geometric shapes. When the model turned, the bedazzled strip bounced on the spine for a bombshell finale. It was a hit. Hopefully, those femme fatale numbers will make their way down this year’s red carpets, too.
