Many patients ask us whether the injections given during IVF can cause long-term health issues, especially cancer.

In IVF, hormone injections are given for 8–10 days to stimulate multiple eggs. This creates a temporary hyper-estrogenic environment in the body, where estrogen levels rise much higher than in natural pregnancy. However, these levels normalize after treatment. Alongside, medicines are given to increase progesterone levels for embryo implantation.

One or two IVF cycles usually do not cause harm. But if a patient undergoes multiple repeated cycles (for example, 6–8 times or more) without success, the constant rise and fall of hormone levels may carry some health risks. In such cases, it is important to consult your doctor about possible long-term risks, including cancer.

Patients who are obese, diabetic, or hypertensive already have a less favorable response to high estrogen levels, which may increase risks like fibroids or adenomyosis. Moreover, if there is a family history of breast, ovarian, or colon cancer, one must be extra cautious and always discuss it with the doctor.

IVF treatment is generally safe and not directly harmful.

A few cycles are not risky, but repeated, long-term hormone stimulation without benefit should be carefully evaluated.
