Absence Makes the Art Grow Finer: Iain McGilchrist, Michel de Montaigne, & Jean Starobinski

Описание к видео Absence Makes the Art Grow Finer: Iain McGilchrist, Michel de Montaigne, & Jean Starobinski

This video stands alone but is the third one on this Channel that uses Iain McGilchrist's work as a jumping off point to explore the relationship between how our brains work and what art can contribute ot our understanding of the world as it is actually experienced rather than as it is presented in abstract scientific models.
I look at the various barriers and gaps that, paradoxically, give art its power. The work of three writers – Montaigne, Starobinski, and McGilchrist – is used to understand better the power of painting. Pictures used for illustration (in order of appearance) are those of the following artists: unknown master from the School of Fontainbleu, Van Gogh, Caspar David Friederich, Walker Evans, Marcelle Loubchansky, Giorgio De Chirico, and Caravaggio.

The main McGilchrist text referred to in this particular video and from which quotations are taken is Volume One of his "The Matter With Things".
The Official Site for Iain McGilchrist contains an extremely useful pile of resources.
