An Iranian-launched drone targeted a chemical tanker in the Indian Ocean on Saturday, according to the U.S. Department of Defense.

The Pentagon spokesperson informed Reuters that the CHEM PLUTO, a chemical tanker under the flag of Liberia, owned by a Japanese entity, and operated by a Netherlands company, was hit around 10 a.m. local time (6 a.m. GMT). The incident occurred 200 nautical miles off the coast of India, and the attack involved a one-way drone fired from Iran.
The recent incident underscores the escalating tensions in the region and introduces a new threat to maritime routes following the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel.

Both the Iranian government and its allied militant forces in Yemen have openly condemned the Israeli military operations in Gaza. Numerous aid monitors report a significant number of Palestinian casualties in the ongoing conflict.

According to the Pentagon statement, this marks the "seventh Iranian assault on commercial shipping since 2021," adding to the growing concerns about security in the region.
The attack resulted in no casualties, and a brief onboard fire was swiftly extinguished. This incident occurred just 200 nautical miles off the coast of India.

Despite a request for comment, the spokesperson for the Iranian delegation at the United Nations did not provide an immediate response.
