Akbar’s tomb… This magnificent structure was built in Sikandra, about 12 km from Agra. However, today it has become an integral part of the city itself. Surrounded by tall stone walls, the complex, known as Bihishtabad — the “city of paradise” — looks more like a fort than a tomb. And this very uniqueness sets the mausoleum of the third Mughal emperor, Akbar, apart from others. Built of red sandstone and white marble, the tomb, despite its grandeur, appears somewhat irregular and unfinished. Why it looks this way is something we will discuss shortly, but let us begin from the final moments of Emperor Akbar’s life…

The tomb’s design was later altered, and some of its parts were demolished and rebuilt. This is why its architecture appears disjointed and somewhat random, as if something is still incomplete. Jahangir, Akbar’s son, built a grand southern gateway to the complex, adorned with four unusually slender marble minarets. These four minarets, standing without a dome, hint that a marble dome was originally planned to crown the structure but never got completed.

Satellite imagery even reveals that the platform for the dome was prepared on the roof of the gateway. And here’s another fascinating fact — the minarets of the Taj Mahal were inspired by the ones built at Akbar’s tomb. Had a marble dome been constructed here, the tomb would have closely resembled the Taj Mahal.

3 अक्टूबर 1605...63 साल की उम्र में अकबर बिस्तर पर आखिरी सांसें ले रहे थे. उनके बेटे सलीम उनके पास मौजूद थे... अकबर बोल भी नहीं पा रहे थे...उन्होंने इशारा किया कि उनकी शाही पगड़ी सलीम के सिर पर रखी जाए और उनकी तलवार उसके बगल में लटका दी जाए। अकबर दम तोड़ देते हैं और सलीम को उस दिन के बाद जहांगीर के नाम से जाना जाने लगता है...जहांगीर मतलब 'विश्व विजेता...

अकबर ने सिकंदरा यानी इस जगह को अपने मकबरे के तौर पर पहले ही चुन लिया था. और इसका पूरा नक्शा खुद तैयार करवाया था. अकबर ने अपने पिता हुमायूं के मकबरे के पास मकबरा इसलिए नहीं बनवाया कि वो नहीं चाहते थे कि उनके और उनके पिता के मकबरे की तुलना की जा सके...या उनके पिता का मकबरा उनके मकबरे से कमतर न नजर आए...अकबर को सिकंदरा के मुगल नाम 'बिहिश्ताबाद' में दफनाया गया था। हालांकि तब तक मकबरे का निर्माण कार्य चल रहा था. दो साल बाद जब जहांगीर ने इस जगह का मुआएना किया तो उन्हें वास्तुकारों का काम और मकबरे के डिजाइन से छेड़छाड़ पसंद नहीं आई.शायद जहांगीर अपने पिता के मकबरे पर ज्यादा दौलत नहीं लुटाना चाहते थे. हालांकि इस मकबरे को बनाने में उस वक्त 15 लाख रुपये खर्च हुए थे...
