Author & historian Janelle Molony (#hottiehistorian) discusses a Civil War Era battle that has been missed in historical literature for 160 years: the Battle at Red Buttes that occurred on July 25, 1864... almost exactly one year before the other battle located near here, in which Caspar Collins (namesake of Fort Caspar) died.

This battle occurred between members of the 11th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry (headquartered at Fort Laramie, and stationed at Deer Creek Garrison and Platte Bridge Station) and members of a Sihaspa/Blackfoot Sioux band being led by Chief Bill Grass (Wakanka yapi or Charging Bear). One ex-military man, Josiah Kelly, also volunteered on this mission, in hopes of finding any useful information about his wife, Fanny, who was kidnapped and taken into slavery during the Platte River Raids earlier that month.
