It was a major milestone for the city of Sioux Falls on Thursday.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center happened late afternoon for the $115 Million Events Center, which is set to open in two years.

Waves of people attended the celebration and to watch officials dig dirt to construct the new events center and to see this long-time project come alive.

"This is a historic day for Sioux Falls, said Huether.

Deb Peterson was there on behalf of the Chamber Of Commerce and said she's been following the Sioux Falls Events Center's progress since day one and being a part of the official groundbreaking ceremony, was quite the experience.

"As a native of Sioux Falls, I think this is awesome," said Peterson." I looked around as I looked about, because I've been here all my life and to see the groundbreaking and all the tents up and the machines out there, it looks like it's a real thing.

Mayor Mike Huether said city members have been talking about building a new Events Center for well over 13 years, and now, it's coming to life.

"It's one of those things where you work so hard towards something and then to actually see it happen is a big, big deal," said Huether.

And now with the voters trust, Mayor Huether said he and the rest of the Events Center team will work hard to make this a monumental achievement.

"We'll be prudent, we'll be responsible, but we are going to create an Events Center that people are just unbelievably proud of," said Huether.

Councilman Jim Entenman said he's had 10 years of personal commitment to helping make this facility a reality and says the impact will be huge for Sioux Falls.

"The dreams of the opportunities waiting for our children and our grandchildren as a result of the construction of this Events Center," said Entenman.

And for Peterson, she said for the next two years, she'd anticipate the grand opening.

"I expect to see this huge building, awesome building, ready to take concerts and people to come and have some great family and fun nights," said Peterson.

The Events Center is expected to be finished in Fall of 2014.
