The Tang dynasty (618-907 AD) is famous for being a period that embraced diverse cultures and looser social norms. Did the ill-fated Yang Guifei, blamed for destroying an empire with her voluptuous beauty, reflect the unusual beauty standards of the entire Tang dynasty? We take a look at how women’s fashions of the Tang were influenced not only by the cultures along the Silk Road, but also by traditionally masculine ways of dress.
