Thought sand castles were only for kids at the beach? Think again. This annual sand sculpture competition in Rorschach, located on lake Constance/Bodensee, Switzerland, makes sand castles in to beautiful works of art. These artists used only sand and water to craft these amazing scenes. The key is to get the right mixture of sand and water. If there is too much or too little water, the risk of a sand slide exists. The water serves as a bridge bonding each sand grain to the next. This is the phenomenon of surface tension at work. It is also helpful to have sand with a rough quality to help the grains “stick” together via the water. Smooth sand grans slide past one another making construction difficult. This event took place in August and September 2018. The entrance fee is 5 Fr. This year’s winning teams were 1. Ruslan Arslanbaev / Evgenii Tarnopolskii, 2. Wilfred Stijger / Edith van de Wetering, and 3. Karlis Ile / Maija Puncule.
