About Author: Raymond Thornton Chandler (July 23, 1888 – March 26, 1959) was an American-British novelist and screenwriter. In 1932, at the age of forty-four, Chandler became a detective fiction writer after losing his job as an oil company executive during the Great Depression. His first short story, "Blackmailers Don't Shoot", was published in 1933 in Black Mask, a popular pulp magazine. His first novel, The Big Sleep, was published in 1939. In addition to his short stories, Chandler published seven novels during his lifetime (an eighth, in progress at the time of his death, was completed by Robert B. Parker). All but Playback have been made into motion pictures, some more than once. In the year before his death, he was elected president of the Mystery Writers of America

About the book: The Little Sister is a 1949 novel by Raymond Chandler, his fifth featuring the private investigator Philip Marlowe. The story is set in Los Angeles in the late 1940s and follows Marlowe's investigation of a missing persons case and blackmail scheme centered around a Hollywood starlet. With several scenes involving the film industry, the novel was partly inspired by Chandler's experience working as a screenwriter in Hollywood and his low opinion of the industry and most of the people in it. The book was first published in the UK in June 1949 and was released in the United States three months later.

In "The Little Sister," Raymond Chandler's iconic detective, Philip Marlowe, finds himself entangled in a web of mystery, corruption, and Hollywood glamour. Set in the gritty underbelly of 1940s Los Angeles, Marlowe is hired by a young woman from Manhattan to locate her estranged sister, Orfamay Quest. As Marlowe delves deeper into the case, he discovers that Orfamay has disappeared without a trace, leading him down a treacherous path of deception and danger.

This novel is a classic example of Chandler's hard-boiled detective fiction, where Marlowe navigates through a labyrinthine plot involving blackmail, murder, and the dark secrets of Tinseltown. Along the way, he encounters a cast of memorable characters, each with their own hidden agendas. As Marlowe peels back the layers of deception, he must confront his own moral code and the corrupt world he inhabits.
