The smiles on the young men's faces Tuesday broke through the crowd of deputies that surrounded them.
A jury had just convicted Robert Alvarez, 21, and Darnell Razz, 19, of first-degree murder in the April 2010 executions of store clerks Ralston Muller and Michael Dean Bennett during a masked robbery caught on video at a Greenacres Circle K convenience store.
And a judge was just minutes away from sentencing them to life in prison. But the two on Tuesday did the same thing they had done during every court break during their week-long trial. They shared a laugh.
"If ever there was a case where there were defendants that showed no remorse, this is it," Assistant State Attorney Andrew Slater told Circuit Judge Stephen Rapp.
Prosecutors said the two men planned the robbery and burst into the convenience store, killing the clerks for a mere $71.
Deputies had removed Alvarez's mother from the courtroom after her tearful outburst as a court clerk read the verdict. Razz's relatives walked out into the court hallway solemnly after Rapp recessed court briefly before sentencing.
The convictions against Razz and Alvarez meant certain life sentences for both, but Rapp sentenced Razz to two consecutive life sentences and sentenced Alvarez to serve his two life sentences together after the jury found Razz guilty of more aggravating factors in the case.
Razz's attorney Gerald Salerno and Alvarez's attorney Robert Gershman had tried to convince the jurors that the video evidence failed to link the two to the crime. Gershman had planned to call as a witness Ramon Rosario, a 19-year-old man arrested with Razz, Alvarez and several others on racketeering charges.
