“For us doing collaborative artwork with kids on the other side of the world is not just making art, it's not just keeping kids busy. We are resisting occupation. For us, this is fundamental. We need bread, we need medicine, we need to have a minimum of security, which we don't have, but we also need support, solidarity and spirituality.”

STORYLINE:
A group of artists and schoolteachers in Chile linked Gazan and Chilean children together by creating a collaborative mural in capital Santiago.

The joint effort was made possible by using the thoughts, photographs and documents made by the Palestinian children, and then put together by the Chileans in their public school.

The project “The Names of Freedom,” is an initiative by muralist Ian Pierce, who said the idea could be replicated by others.

"For us doing collaborative artwork with kids on the other side of the world is not just making art, it's not just keeping kids busy. We are resisting occupation," Pierce said.

Ana Maria Osorio, a teacher of “Horacio Aravena” school, said the messages convey a "sense of freedom."

Hamas-led militants stormed into southern Israel in a surprise attack on Oct. 7, 2023, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducting around 250.

Around 100 hostages are still in Gaza, at least a third of whom are believed to be dead.

Israel’s subsequent bombardment and ground invasion have killed over 45,000 people in Gaza, more than half of them women and children, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between fighters and civilians in its count.

The offensive has caused widespread destruction and displaced some 90% of Gaza’s 2.3 million people, often multiple times.

Hundreds of thousands are packed into squalid tent camps along the coast as the cold, wet winter sets in.
