Volkswagen Golf Country AWD | Before SUVs and Crossovers existed!

The Volkswagen Golf Country (7,735 cars built), co-manufactured by Steyr-Daimler-Puch in Austria, is designed for average off-road driving. It had more suspension travel, Syncro all-wheel drive, improved ground clearance of 21 centimeters (8.3 in), front and rear bull bars (usually on a single headlight grille) , a skid plate to protect the engine area, a subframe to protect the rear Syncro differential and driveshaft, and an externally mounted spare wheel on a stowable triangular frame at the rear.

In Europe, it was offered with the famous 1.8 8v 1P petrol engine with 98 hp (72 kW). There were also: 1500 "Country Allround" designed to appeal to a wider audience, made without the electric luxuries like electric and heated mirrors, leather steering wheel and bull bar without headlight grilles, compared to a range more affordable; 558 "Country - Chrome paket" with chrome bull bars, sliding sunroof, engine preheating and beige leather interior and interior; and 50 "Country GTI" 112 PS (82 kW) 1.8 GTI petrol engine, designed only for the Golf Country project VW staff. Golf Country was particularly popular in the Alpine regions of Central Europe.
