Implementation science, as applied to health care, is the systematic development and application of methods that enable evaluators to understand how and why different strategies are successful (or not) in implementing change into health care practices. Implementation science outcomes are a critical set of tools to use in conducting such evaluations. In this talk, you will be introduced to implementation science outcomes and how they were applied in evaluating the implementation of three unique health care interventions: 1) a new health care role; 2) a new care model; and 3) a new method of patient visits. You will hear how different types of data were used in each setting to address different implementation outcomes, why they were chosen, and how the data were obtained and analyzed. Our goal is that these examples will help you identify similar or parallel strategies for selecting appropriate outcomes and measurement strategies in your current and future quality improvement projects.

Marcy Winget is the Director of the Evaluation Sciences Unit in the Division of Primary Care and Population Health, Stanford School of Medicine. She has a PhD in epidemiology and an MHS in biostatistics, both from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She has 20+ years’ experience in healthcare-related research, just over 6 of which have been at Stanford. Her passion is conducting research aimed at improving the quality of the health care delivery system. At Stanford, Marcy has led many projects evaluating a wide-range of improvement efforts, both within and external to Stanford Health Care applying Implementation Science methods.
