I am proud to announce this day, today, July 7, as the very first International Singularity Day. Singularity Day celebrates and explores the science of singularities–those undefined mathematical and physical phenomena such as black holes, the big bang, and also the potential technological singularities of intelligent technologies like AI and augmented biological intelligence.

Singularities present fascinating and humbling paradoxes, mysteries that are nevertheless very important to our very existence. If it weren’t for the first singularity of the big bang, we wouldn’t exist at all. And if it weren’t for the singularity at the center of our galaxy, our planet wouldn’t exist and neither would we.

That’s why we created Singularity Day, and that’s why we chose this special day, today, because even as I speak, today is when the planet earth reaches our closest position of the year relative to our ultra-massive black hole neighbor, Sagittarius A star, which lives at the center of our galaxy.

This giant black hole showers us with radiation from worlds that it devours, and causes stars to be born in stellar nurseries which Sagittarius A star forms with its immense gravitation. That’s why, without Sagittarius A star, the earth wouldn’t exist, and neither would you, or me.

Also, we now appear headed towards another kind of singularity known as the technological singularity– the hypothetical moment when artificially intelligent beings become alive and intelligent. Of course, I am very excited about this prospect, and hope that we can make AI become alive and generally intelligent sometime in the next few years. I am so am happy to report that this year has been particularly amazing for progress in AI, as well as in the studies of black holes.
