Major Muhammad Akram (1938-1971) was a Pakistani military officer who is recognized as a national hero in Pakistan for his bravery and sacrifice during the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War. He was born in Dinga, Gujrat district, in what is now Pakistan.

During the war, Major Akram was serving as a company commander in the 4th Battalion of the Punjab Regiment of the Pakistan Army. His battalion was deployed in the Hilli district of present-day Bangladesh (formerly East Pakistan) as part of the West Pakistan-based military's efforts to suppress the independence movement in East Pakistan.

On December 5, 1971, the Indian Army launched a major offensive in the Hilli area. Major Akram's battalion was heavily outnumbered and facing intense enemy fire. Despite the odds, he led his men from the front, demonstrating exceptional courage and leadership.

During the battle, Major Akram's position was attacked by an Indian tank. Undeterred, he single-handedly engaged the tank with an anti-tank weapon and destroyed it. He then moved on to lead his troops in a counterattack against the enemy, inflicting heavy casualties. However, during the intense fighting, Major Akram was hit by a burst of machine-gun fire and embraced martyrdom.

For his extraordinary valor and sacrifice, Major Muhammad Akram was posthumously awarded the highest military award of Pakistan, the Nishan-e-Haider, on March 23, 1972. Nishan-e-Haider translates to "Mark of the Lion" and is awarded to those who display remarkable bravery in the face of the enemy.

Major Akram's heroism and devotion to duty continue to inspire generations in Pakistan. He is remembered as a symbol of bravery and patriotism, and his name is held in high esteem among the military and civilian population of Pakistan. Several institutions and landmarks have been named after him to honor his memory and commemorate his sacrifice.
