On Friday, 5 December 2025, Mourning began for “Witness D” — Marius van der Merwe — after he was shot dead outside his home in Brakpan, Ekurhuleni.
Van der Merwe had provided explosive testimony to the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, alleging a murder cover-up linked to senior officials at the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD), including a directive by suspended deputy chief Julius Mkhwanazi to dispose of a body in either a dam or mine shaft.
According to police, the perpetrators used an AK-47 rifle, and no items (firearm, phone, wallet) were stolen — suggesting a targeted, “hit-style” killing rather than a robbery.
A manhunt is now underway for the shooters and those who ordered the hit. National policing authorities have vowed a full investigation, and calls are growing for stronger witness protection measures for others testifying at the Madlanga Commission.
