Content Warning: Splatterhouse contains strong animated violence with blood and gore.

The PC-Engine port of Namco's horror arcade game Splatterhouse is an admirable attempt, but it loses some things in the trip down to a 4 megabit HuCard. Certain background elements and animations are removed. So is some of the gore. The Turbo-Grafx 16 localisation has a little extra censorship.

Now, here's the FM Towns, one of the first 32-bit platforms. In 1992, it received a port of Splatterhouse on CD-ROM, by none other than Ving. Nothing is censored here. Pretty much all the content of the arcade game is intact. One thing omitted in the PCE version is the demo scene of Rick and Jennifer caught in a storm and seeking refuge in the house. It's in this one. (27:32) All ingame text is in English.

This isn't quite a perfect port. I'll give it a 98%. A minor detail in stage 4 didn't make it. And the resolution is slightly lower, reducing the visible area just a bit. Stage 1 and 2's boss rooms don't fully fit on screen.

Some FM Towns games will not play on Marty console systems due to high RAM requirements. That said, Marty's 2 MB RAM is enough for Splatterhouse.

This video was made with MAME 0.252 using the FM Towns Marty driver. While MAME will warn you that FM Towns does not work, you can play Splatterhouse 100% in it.
