Hey everybody. Welcome to etrailer.com. I'm Bobby. And today, we're taking a look at the Malone DownLoader J-style kayak carrier here on our 2020 Jeep Gladiator. So, this can be a very nice way, guys, of getting your kayaks either up on your roof, or even potentially, on some kind of bed rack system here on our Gladiator. Now, the one thing I'll say to it though, the reason we actually have it here above our cab as opposed to on the back of our overland, is that these bars we're actually just a little bit too thick for these guys.
Now, we actually do have some longer bolts as well that come available. And depending on your own roof rack at home, they might actually work for you. Today, I just went ahead and threw them here on my Rhino-Rack Vortex bars as they are kind of more your more traditional aero style that I think a lot of us are gonna be kind of more used to seeing, and that actually has a really good fit on here. Really, really like how that mounted option works, and we're gonna help break that down later on in the video for you. We do have a 75 pound weight capacity here, which is great.
So, I think a lot of us are gonna have a pretty A-OK time with our kayaks. And our kayak here is about 9 1/2 feet long as well. So, you can see, pretty sizable for our Gladiator. Now, I do kind of like it here on the cab but the one thing I'll say, we're gonna be very limited on our weight capacity for our roof. So, what's nice about this is, we're gonna show you guys later on, you're gonna have a ton of room there on the other side for a variety of other accessories.
The one thing that's gonna really limit us though, is the roof of our Gladiator. Now, I haven't found anything concrete, but one thing I did see was about 150 pounds where that was on the Jeep Wrangler, which is the same kind of composition as these guys. Again, take that with a grain of salt. Let's make sure we're doing a good job of consulting our own vehicle's owner's manual guide to make sure we're not having any danger with actually mounting them on. But again, very, very nice system here.
And I actually do have them mounted on 65 inch bars here on the Gladiator. Why I like that You can see, I have a little bit of overhang here and that allows me to actually mount it on the outside of my towers, making it a lot easier to actually access my kayak whether I'm getting it on or off. I really do like how that works. You're seeing here at the top too, we do have this nice little shelf plate. What I like about that guy, becomes easy to get your kayak kind of loaded up on there and then slot it in. And what's great about this, we could actually use the Telos load assist system to actually clamp right on here on the side. And what that allows you to do is kind of work your kayak up. So, if you guys having a little trouble lifting this up, I know I'm 6'1" and already you can see that's pretty above my head there. If we're not quite liking that height, that could be a great little sub system to actually look at to actually help us, assist us get our kayak on here. You also are seeing some pretty nice straps that are included. Now, they're not my favorite straps. Do they do the job Yes, and we have this little felt covering there protecting us. Just a little cam buckle there. But one thing I'll say, it is exposed. So, you might see a little bit of tarnish on there, and I would just be worried about it a little bit because it been out in the weather. And so, a little bit of maintenance on here can go a long way, making sure that guy is usable for the years to come. Now, one thing I might suggest is actually looking at the etrailer kayak tie-down kit. And why that is, I'm actually already using one little sub, sub part of that whole system, or that kit I should say, to actually make this work. And where I'm doing that is actually on my bow strap. So, we also do have bow and stern straps that come included. However, on a Gladiator, there's really not too much room to hook up inside our hood. Let's go ahead and take a look. So, we actually are gonna come with our ropes here for our bow and our stern. It works really, really well in the back cause our Gladiator has some pretty nice tie off points in the bed of our truck. Of course, here in the front though, there's really not a good place for our little S-hook to actually find a home for itself. So, what I've done, I've actua
