Königssee is a lake located in the southeastern tip of the Berchtesgadener Land district in the German state of Bavaria. The lake, located near the border with Austria, is part of the Berchtesgaden National Park.
The lake, located in the municipality of Schönau am Königsee, is the third deepest lake in Germany. The lake was formed by a glacier during the last ice age. Its length from north to south reaches 7.7 km, while from west to east it can reach 1.7 km wide.
The name of the lake literally means "king's lake"; however, Bavaria only became a kingdom after Elector Maximilian I Joseph took the title of king in 1806. Therefore, the name probably comes from the name of a local nobleman, "Kuno", which appears in several historical sources discussing the granting of the Fürstpropstei Berchtesgaden in the 12th century; the lake was previously called Kunigsee.
The Königssee railway line previously operated on the shores of the lake from 1909 to 1965. The last line was dismantled in 1971 and the former station at Berchtesgaden was demolished in 2012. The only thing that remains of the line is the Königssee station, which is now a restaurant. The former track is now used by pedestrians. The lake is so clear and advertised as the cleanest in Germany that only electric boats, paddle boats and pedal boats have been allowed on the lake since 1909.
