Last December, when I was in Orlando, Florida for a business trip, I took a quick detour to run the Festivus 50-mile Trail Run in #Jacksonville. I had never heard of the race until I researched @Ultrasignup for a race near Orlando. Festivus 50 is a relatively new event produced by Sombrero Running Events. And yes, the race name did catch my attention as I’m a huge fan of Seinfeld.

The race course is a non-technical and flat 4.2-mile loop. 50-mile runners have 16 hours to complete 12 loops, so this is a manageable race for first-time 50-milers. I was aiming for 9 loops or 37.5 miles and more or less as a recovery run. A week before, I ran four 50k ultras in 4 days known as the Seattle Quadzilla Challenge, so my legs were still quite sore. I also needed to drive to Orlando immediately after the race, check into my hotel, and meet with my coworkers for dinner.

Besides the shockingly freezing temperature on the race morning, Festivus 50 was a terrific event. It’s very low-key but well put together based on course marking, aid station, and volunteer support. Although only in its second year, Festivus 50 race director, Mike Martinez (@sobersombrerorunning92), and his crew sure made it look like they had been managing this event for years.
