In the first part of our webinar series, we looked at the wall temperatures of the die under the combined effects of die heating, spray cooling, air blow-off and cooling channels. In the second part of our series, we analyzed the filling of the die. Now, we will turn to the cooling and solidification stages of high pressure die casting.

The formation of internal porosity can affect the final quality of the casting part. Once filling is complete, a solidification simulation is performed to track the opening of voids that results in defects. In addition to predicting microporosity and macroporosity, FLOW-3D CAST is also used to investigate a detailed temperature history of the casting part to determine if additional cooling is required, and whether the initial process parameters need to be modified. In the final stage of HPDC, we also look at the thermally induced stresses when the casting part is being cooled after ejection from the die.
