who go sorrowing
at the joy of their father?
White hairs have they,
the white-hooded ones,
and must wake in the wind.

Who are these maidens
who go many together
at the joy of their father?
To many a man
they have with harm come,
and they need not be watchful.

Who are these brides
who go among the sea-rocks,
and have their fare after their father?
A hard bed have they,
the white-hooded ones,
and play seldom in the calm.
Heidrek King, think you on the riddle!

Saw I in the summer
within the sunset
the king's men awaken
very merry.
The earls drank
the ale silently,
and crying the ale-casks stood.
