The story is set in Mexico, in Mexico City (Ciudad de México), in an old stone house (with many rooms and floors) formerly belonging to a “Spanish Count.”

The top floor is rented by an American firm, and the narrator, their bookkeeper, recounts the haunting.
There is a duel in the story’s back history: the Count fought (and was killed) by an Austrian prince in a night duel, possibly over treasure or a woman.

The narrator’s coworker/colleague claims to have seen a ghost, i.e. the apparition (espanto).
The story incorporates Spanish phrases into the narrative, owing to its Mexican setting.
The story was first published in 1897 in The Times Democrat and later republished under alternate titles, such as “The Ghost of the Count.”

Elizabeth Gilbert Cunningham-Terry (sometimes printed as E. Gilbert Cunningham-Terry) was active during the late Victorian to Edwardian eras. She wrote supernatural short fiction that appeared in periodicals and anthologies. She is a relatively obscure figure in ghost-story scholarship, with only a handful of tales attributed to her (e.g., At the Witching Hour). Unlike more famous contemporaries (M. R. James, E. F. Benson), her work has largely slipped out of the mainstream canon. Most of her stories survive only through reprints on specialist websites and anthologies of “forgotten ghost stories.” Unfortunately, very little else is documented about her life — she does not appear to have a large surviving oeuvre, and her biographical details remain elusive.
