Days of Our Lives is a digital art project with roots in Ben’s visual diaries of the late 1990s. Ben has continued his ‘drawing journals’ tenaciously over the years, with countless notebooks, sketch pads and sheaves of paper brimming with kernels of ideas and brewing motifs and imagery that have become synonymous with his art practice.

Ben’s ‘diary entries’ took a different turn with Singapore’s ‘circuit-breaker’ measures (7 April – 1 June 2020) that were enforced in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. As with many who were compelled by the city’s orders to ‘stay home’, Ben began encountering uninterrupted stretches of time in ‘lock-down’ mode.

These pandemic-prompted works continue Ben’s ‘diarist’ approach - a rhythmic visual record of observations, thoughts, feelings and sensations of lock-down in his residence. Simple graphic forms of boy, tree, black birds, wolf-dog, nature and graffiti scribblings recur in a stream of imagery that also conjure up monstrosities and dark, fearful spectres, cages and escapades, yearnings for and imaginings of open spaces and memories of childhood. These have been rendered in Ben’s signature faux naïve style with its street art vibe, then digitally calibrated in the saturated hues and effects so unique to digital ‘mark-making’.

Days of Our Lives (referencing the popular day-time soap drama) presents 37 digital artworks, produced and adapted from original works on paper in this virtual solo exhibition.
