How to change the oil - BMW X3

In this video, we will show you how to change the oil in the BMW X3.

One of the easy DIY’s for maintaining the E83 X3 has been oil changes every 7500 miles. This is more frequent than the service indicator life on the dash and has so far, served us well. The procedure is really no different than oil change on other vehicles except you need a specialized tool to be able to remove the oil filter.


Fortunately this tool is easily found on Bavarian Autosport for $15 or even on Amazon. Second, is trick is knowing the oil capacity, since BMW was not so subtle about encouraging dealer only changes by not listing it in the manual as they had for years. The capacity is 6.9 Quarts when the oil is changed with the filter.

What you need:

Parts:
7.0 quarts of 5w/30 Synthetic Motor Oil
BMW oil filter w/ drain plug crush washer, and two oil filter gaskets. pn# 11 42 7 566 327

Tools Needed;
86mm Oil Filter Cap removal socket - from Bavarian Autosport, but they are also sold on Amazon. Appx $15.
17mm Socket to remove the drain plug
Ramps/Jack Stands or a Lift
Something to drain oil in and take to recycling facility.
Small flat head screw driver, for oil trap door and oil filter gaskets
Funnel
Shop Towels
