Citizen participation mechanisms are glaringly missing from emerging AI regulation. Individuals impacted by the outcomes of algorithmic systems are often excluded from the system design process and are denied paths for remedial. The lack of participatory mechanisms can be incredibly harmful especially in the context of algorithmic systems that can influence decisions related to benefits, opportunities, and punishments. In this talk, Maya proposes a framework for involving people in enabling the responsible use of algorithmic decision-making systems while avoiding common participatory pitfalls. She presents a set of practical recommendations geared towards system owners that aim to minimize the risk of algorithmic harms on society.
