Meet 3I/ATLAS — the third confirmed interstellar object, after the legendary ‘Oumuamua (2017) and comet 2I/Borisov (2019). First spotted on July 1, 2025, by the ATLAS telescope in Chile, this cosmic stranger hurtles through space on a highly hyperbolic orbit, racing at nearly 58 km per second, forever unbound to the Sun.

On October 29, 2025, it will make its closest approach to the Sun, passing at 1.36 AU, while its closest approach to Earth will be on December 4, 2025 — about 1.8 AU (≈ 270 million km) away. Safe for us… yet filled with mysteries.

Scientists believe 3I/ATLAS is a massive comet, possibly weighing more than 33 billion tons with a nucleus around 5 kilometers wide. But it’s no ordinary comet. Its coma is dominated by carbon dioxide rather than water — one of the most extreme CO₂-to-H₂O ratios ever seen. Even at 3.5 AU from the Sun, it shows signs of water activity, defying expectations.

Its dust polarization is unlike any known Solar System comet, and its ghostly tail of alien ices and dust stretches across the darkness like a cosmic omen. Some studies even suggest it may be anomalously massive, raising questions about how such interstellar giants form — and how many more wander the galaxy unseen.
