(22 Jun 2021) Israeli police used stun grenades and sprayed skunk water at Palestinians in the tense neighbourhood of Sheikh Jarrah late Monday in an attempt to prevent clashes between Jewish settlers and Arab residents of the neighbourhood
Israeli media reported that Jewish settlers and Palestinians clashed earlier in the evening and threw chairs and stones at one another.
A house inhabited by Jewish settlers is under constant police protection as it is surrounded by Palestinian neighbours.
A similar incident was reported last week as Jews and Arabs got into a fistfight.
On Monday Israeli police could be seen raiding a Palestinian home and throwing stun grenade at residents.
At least one Palestinian was injured though it was not immediately clear what caused the injury.
Sheikh Jarrah has been the scene of frequent demonstrations and clashes between Palestinian protesters and police over a court case in which a group of hardline Israeli settlers seeks to evict a number of Palestinian families from their homes.
Israel calls it a real-estate dispute, while Palestinians and rights groups say the case highlights discriminatory policies that are aimed at pushing Palestinians out of Jerusalem to preserve its Jewish majority.
In May, Israel and Gaza's Islamic militant rulers, Hamas, fought an 11-day war that was started when Hamas fired salvos of rockets toward Jerusalem and other Israeli towns.
Hamas said the attacks were a response to Israeli police raids and heavy-handed policy against Muslim worshippers at Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa mosque and planned evictions of Palestinian families from the Arab neighbourhood of Sheikh Jarrah.
Israel captured east Jerusalem, where the Old City is located, in the 1967 war and annexed it in a move not recognized internationally.
The Palestinians want east Jerusalem to be the capital of their future state.
Its status was one of the thorniest issues in the peace process, which ground to a halt more than a decade ago.
