""Never ever second-guess what Rei Kawakubo is going to do next, or what she’s going to say about it. To arrive in a room and to be seated, waiting, around a plain square wooden plinth was to imagine that something on the Comme order of brow-knitting solemnity was about to commence. Instead, it was something way more far-fetched, instantly transmitted by the simple projection of a few twirling multicolored disco lights from above. And just like that, the stage was a dance floor, thronged by adolescent boys going for it, dressed in baggy glitter shorts and drapey sparkling jackets.

More came on, some whirling about in long suiting jackets with wildly inventive patchworks of fake fur, brocade, and velvet. There were brightly colored animal-pattern knits and T-shirts depicting a photo montage print of a mass of dolls. We knew this, because the boys took turns opening up their jackets and giving a flash to the photographers, before whirling off again for a few more rounds in their colorful Nike Air Max 180 sneakers.

It was really good fun, and meant to be. As the crowd pushed back to congratulate her, Kawakubo delivered her one-liner about the show: “It’s what’s inside that counts!” Then she looked at all the smiling faces of her visitors and asked, “Why didn’t everyone get up and join in?”

Quite why Kawakubo had gone this route might lead back to the Met Ball in New York in May. Creative director Ronnie Cooke Newhouse, who sat at the table with the guest of honor that night, thought she might have been triggered by watching Jaden Smith getting up to dance to the Migos set that night. Just when the world went heavy, Rei Kawakubo lightened up. Unexpected, counterintuitive? What else would we expect of her? Just when the audiences at her exhibition line up to admire the great intellectual monuments of her storied career, she ups and does something young that makes everyone laugh. Quite simply, it was a delight, one that permeated through the audience and had everyone, young and senior, men and women, making mental shopping lists.""
