Tartans & Fictional Characters Do superheroes or literary characters have tartans? Is Tartan Fandom?

How does a fictional character like Scrooge McDuck get their own tartan? In some cases, as with Disney characters like MacDuck, the tartan was created as part of the character, originally simply a decoration or small plot element, and became "a thing" almost by accident.

Other times, such as with the tartan created for the Disney film 'Brave' the Sett was created by the studio both for use in the content and as a marketing ploy. In other words, the tartan was designed purposefully because the character or story was Scottish or "Celtic".

This also applies to the tartans created for the Starz series 'Outlander' which while based on historic tartans, are not actually historic or official clan tartans. In point of fact there were very few clan tartans at the time the series is set (mid-18th century), so the whole exercise is one of marketing and playing to the expectations of a mass audience that knows few details of Scottish history.

However, the most common way a fictional character or fictional group gets a tartan of its own is though passionate fandom. Someone who loves the character AND loves tartan comes up with the idea. This is why we have DC superhero tartans and why there is an official tartan for Starfleet.

In most cases, these tartans never get woven or made into kilts, but there are exceptions. The most recent and best example of a fictional fandom tartan becoming "real" is the recent R'Lyeh tartan designed for fans of the H.P. Lovecraft mythos (and Cthulhu in particular). USA Kilts was the company who arranged the weaving of a special run of this tartan and it proved to be a big hit with both Lovecraftians and the kilt-wearing community in general. The reason being that it is a gorgeous tartan on its own. Good design often trumps symbolism.
