July 10 – Day of the Seven Brothers (Estonian: seitsmevennapäev)

The elders of Väike-Maaja would have spoken of this day as one steeped in sorrow and defiance, woven into the fabric of olden memory. It was said that there once might have lived seven brothers who, with all their hearts, would have honoured the ancient Estonian faith. And when the Germans came, seeking to impose a foreign creed by force, those brothers would not have bowed their heads – they would not have renounced the ways of their forebears, nor would they have betrayed their truth.

They would have endured the pyres, burning for three long days and nights, until their bodies turned to ash. Yet even then the persecutors, unappeased in their wrath, would have set fire to their mother Mare as well, yearning to erase all trace of memory and to uproot every seed of unbroken spirit.

And so, through the generations, folk would have believed that if rain were to fall upon this day, it would not cease for seven weeks thereafter. But if the sun shone brightly enough that a man might leap upon his horse without splashing in the mud, then fair weather would abide and the season prove kind.

And it must be admitted that even now, people still lift their eyes to the sky on this solemn day, as though the very air preserved the echo of that ancient vow – and oftentimes, the old omen comes true, reminding all that the memory of a people is stronger than any flame.
